FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CLASS:

Do you have to be a certain age to attend class?
No – Women and girls of all ages are welcome. Currently my youngest student is in grade school and my oldest student is a great, grandmother.

Do I have to show my belly?
No – Actually some professional belly dancers never show their bellies. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with your dress and appearance.

Is belly dance good exercise?
Absolutely! – Please refer to the article titled, “The Benefits of Bellydance” for a detailed discussion.

Am I too heavy to belly dance?
No – Belly dance is a low impact dance perfectly suited for the full-figured woman.

I am a beginner. When can I start?
Anytime – Throughout the year we will study belly dance, starting from the beginning and working our way forward. Periodically I will back up to the beginning and review old material. This allows for new students to catch up and for current students to review.

How do I register for classes?
For classes at Lindale Recreation Center, arrive 10-15 minutes prior to class and sign up at the front desk. For classes at In Step, arrive 5-10 minutes early and register with me.  If you wish to pay for only the one time class it is $10.

What do I wear to class?
Wear anything you are comfortable moving and stretching in. Women wear a variety of clothes ranging from stretch pants to long or mid-length skirts. Tops can be T-shirts, sports bras, crop tops, etc. Usually women dance barefoot, although occasionally a student may wish to wear a sock or dance shoe and this is fine. It is customary for women to wear some sort of hip wrap and I do provide several practice wraps for class use.

Do I have to perform?
No – You will never be required to perform.

Are there opportunities for performance?
Yes! – Every year Hourglass Bellydance has an end of year recital for students who wish to participate. As noted above, I never require students to perform, but do recommend it because I feel performing completes the belly dance experience and more importantly, because it is so much fun!!! For information about additional performance opportunities, please refer to the article titled, “Performance Opportunities and Possibilities”.
